Malcolm Gets, John Glover, and Chris Hartl will star in Kennedy Center’s production of Terrence McNally’s Lisbon Traviata, to play the Terrace Theater, March 20-April 11. Christopher Ashley will direct.

In the play, Stephen (Gets) adores Maria Callas and dishing the latest gossip with his best friend, Mendy (Glover), a wildly flamboyant and catty opera queen. They talk late into the night in an attempt to distract Stephen from his unraveling relationship with his partner. When Stephen returns home to confront his lover, a tragedy erupts on the scale of a grand opera.

The creative team will include Derek McLane (set), David Woolard (costumes), Philip S. Rosenberg (lighting), and John Gromada (sound).

The play is being presented as part of the venue’s series, Terrence McNally’s Nights at the Opera, which also includes Tyne Daly in Master Class (March 25-April 18) and the playwright’s latest, Golden Age (March 12-April 4), directed by Austin Pendleton. The series will also include “In Conversation: Terrence McNally” featuring the playwright in a discussion moderated by Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser (March 15) and “Masters of McNally” featuring a discussion with Zoe Caldwell, Audra McDonald, and Richard Thomas (March 22).
