Todd M. Kryger, Alexis Rogers to Star in Court Theatre’s Porgy and Bess

Court Theatre has announced casting for Porgy and Bess, to run May 12 – June 19. Charles Newell, with artistic consultant Ron OJ Parson, will direct the production, which will have musical direction by Doug Peck.

With a score by George and Ira Gershwin and a libretto by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, the modern opera focuses on the denizens of the fictitious Catfish Row and in particular, a disabled beggar’s attempts to rescue a woman from her violent lover. Among the most famous songs to come from the piece are “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”

The company will feature Todd M. Kryger and Alexis Rogers in the title roles, along with Karla Beard (Serena), Bear Bellinger (Peter), Sean Blake (Sportin’ Life), James Earl Jones II (Crown), Brian-Alwyn Newland (Robbins), Harriet Nzinga Plumpp (Clara), Kelvin Roston, Jr. (Jim), Bethany Thomas (Maria), Travis Turner (Mingo), Adrienne Walker (Annie), Byron Glenn Willis (Jake), Matt Holzfeind (Ensemble) and Joelle Lamarre (Ensemble).
