Hamilton's Phillipa Soo to Lead Broadway Musical Amélie
The production will move to Broadway following an engagement in Los Angeles.
Soo, whose stage credits also include Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, will take on the title role when the show runs at the Ahmanson Theatre December 4-January 15, with a Broadway production to follow in 2017. She previously played the title character in the show's workshops.
The production, based on the Academy Award-nominated French film, features a book by Tony nominee Craig Lucas (An American in Paris), music by Daniel Messé of the acclaimed band Hem, and lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Tuck Everlasting) and Messé. It is directed by Tony winner Pam MacKinnon and choreographed by Sam Pinkleton.
The production features scenic and costume design by David Zinn, co-lighting design by Jane Cox and Mark Barton, sound design by Kai Harada, projection design by Peter Nigrini, musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby, vocal arrangements by Grigsby and Messé, and orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin.
Amélie, A New Musical had its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2015, where it starred Samantha Barks. Further casting for the Ahmanson and Broadway productions will be announced.
