Katie Lowes, Adam Shapiro to Make Broadway Debuts in Waitress
The real-life married couple will play Dawn and Ogie in the Sara Bareilles musical, currently starring Katharine McPhee.
The producers of Waitress have announced that Katie Lowes (Scandal) and her real-life husband, Adam Shapiro (Steve Jobs), will join the company on July 17, with Lowes playing Dawn, and Shapiro playing Ogie. Lowes and Shapiro — who are both artistic directors of the IAMA Theatre Company in Los Angeles — will join a cast that currently includes Katharine McPhee as Jenna, and Erich Bergen as Dr. Pomatter.
Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's 2007 motion picture, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life.
Waitress features a book by Jessie Nelson, score by Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and direction by Diane Paulus.
