Seth Gilliam, James Waterston to Star in Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s Othello

Seth Gilliam and James Waterston will star as Othello and Iago, respectively, in the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s production of Othello, to play Boston Common, July 28-August 15. Steven Maler will direct.

Shakespeare’s tragedy is a captivating story about the fall of a charismatic Moorish general through the betrayal of one of his most trusted soldiers.

The cast will also include Marianna Bassham (Desdemona), Adrianne Krstansky (Emilia), Dan Roach (Cassio), and Fred Sullivan, Jr. (Brabantio/Gratiano), Jeremy Browne (Montano), McCaela Donovan (Bianca), Grayson Powell (Roderigo), Philippe Bowgen (Lodovico), John McGinnis (Duke), Arthur Barlas (Senator 1), Arthur Waldstein (Senator 2), Nicholas Crandall (Clown), Greg Coughlin (Ensemble), and Terrell Sledge (Ensemble).

The creative team will include Patrick Lynch (scenic design), David Reynoso (costume design), and David Remedios (sound design.

Gilliam is best known for his portrayal of Sgt. Ellis Carver on HBO’s The Wire and as Clayton Hughes on HBO’s Oz. His theater credits include Richard III, Saint Stanislaus Outside the House, The Maids, Hey Little Walter, Man at his Best, Dogeaters, and Topdog/Underdog.

Waterston’s Off-Broadway credits include Parents’ Evening, The Importance of Being Earnest, As You Like It, and Buffalo Gal. Regional credits include three seasons at Old Globe, three seasons playing piano for Greylock Project at Williamstown Theatre Festival and three seasons at The Sundance Institute June Lab.
