Unexpected Joy, starring Tony nominee Sally Mayes, begins its run at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater this evening.

The show tells the story of Joy, Rachel, Tamara, and Lou all of whom are singers with varying degrees of success. Joy, a baby-boomer, is Rachel’s mother, and Rachel in turn is Tamara’s mother. Things get complicated when Joy brings Lou, the woman she intends to marry, into the fold. Presented with the task of introducing her fiancée to her daughter, who is the wife of a successful televangelist, Joy is reasonably apprehensive. When the family gets together to honor Rachel’s father, and Lou, a self-described lesbian terrorist, attends, the sparks and music fly.

The musical features book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Janet Hood. Lynne Taylor-Corbett helms the production, with Gillian Berkowitz as the music director. In addition to Mayes, the cast included Lacretta, Michelle Duffy, and Charity Farrell.

Performances will run through August 20.
