Berekeley Repertory Theatre has announced its 2010-2011 season, which will kick off with Rinne Groff’s new play Compulsion, September 10-October 24. Oskar Eustis directs the work, which is inspired by the life of Meyer Levin.
Richard Bean, Lee Blessing, David Edgar, David Greig, Amit Gupta, Ron Hutchinson, Stephen Jeffreys, Abi Morgan, Ben Ockrent, Simon Stephens, Colin Teevan, Naomi Wallace, and Joy Wilkinson have contributed to The Great Game: Afghanistan (October 22-November 7), a cycle of short scripts that explores Afghanistan over the last 150 years. The work is staged in three parts by Nicolas Kent and Indhu Rubasingham.
Featuring text by bestselling author Lemony Snicket and a score by composer Nathaniel Stookey, The Composer is Dead will be directed by Tony Taccone, November 26-January 9. The piece will involve classic clowning and plenty of uppity puppets from the pioneering Phantom Limb Company, and feature Geoff Hoyle.
Award-winning solo performer Mike Daisey will present two new monologues: The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs and The Last Cargo Cult. Jean-Michele Gregory directs both pieces, running in repertory January 11-February 27. Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Ruined (February 25-April 10), set in the Congo and inspired by Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, will be directed by Liesl Tommy.
Sarah Ruhl’s new translation of Chekhov’s The Three Sisters (April 8-May 22) will be staged by director Les Waters. The season will conclude with the world premiere of an as-yet-untitled work, to star Rita Moreno singing songs and telling stories from her life (May 13-June 12). Taccone will pen the script, with direction by David Galligan.
