Angela Gheorghiu to Replace Anna Netrebko as Mimi in Met Opera’s La Boheme on March 20

Angela Gheorghiu will sing the role of Mimì in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème on Saturday, March 20 at 1pm. She replaces Anna Netrebko in the part, who is unable to perform due to illness.

Marco Armiliato conducts La Bohème, with the cast also including Piotr Beczala, Ruth Ann Swenson, George Petean, Massimo Cavaletti, Oren Gradus, and Paul Plishka. The production was originally staged by Franco Zeffirelli.

Gheorghiu will star in the Met’s production of La Traviata, which opens on March 29, She made her Met debut as Mimì in 1993, and was heard last season at the Met as Magda in Puccini’s La Rondine and as Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. In the Met’s 2010-11 season, she will sing Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
