Broadway songsmiths Tom Kitt (Next to Normal, If/Then, Bring It On The Musical) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Bring It On The Musical, Hamilton) have added an Emmy to their crowded award shelves, receiving the honor for their Tony Awards song "Bigger!" at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held Saturday, August 16. With this win for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, Miranda is now just an Oscar shy of becoming one of the few artists who can claim the coveted EGOT title. He won Grammy and Tony Awards for his musical In the Heights.
A host of other theater vets took home Creative Arts Emmys, as well. Allison Janney (9 to 5) received the honor for her guest appearance on Showtime's Masters of Sex, while Joe Morton (Raisin) brought home the award for his work on ABC's Scandal. Uzo Aduba (Godspell) received the guest actress in a comedy honor for her performance as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. Jane Lynch (Annie) was named Outstanding Host for her series Hollywood Game Night.
Noted scenic designer Derek McLane (Beautiful — The Carole King Musical) received, along with Joe Celli and Gloria Lamb, the award for Outstanding Art Direction for his work on the Oscars, while the technical direction, camerawork, and video control team for NBC's The Sound of Music Live! took home the honor in that category.
The Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special went to TNT's A Tribute to Mel Brooks. Brooks' Broadway footing was set in place by the record-breaking multi-Tony winner The Producers. He later also adapted his film Young Frankenstein for the Broadway stage.
Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) added another Emmy to his mantle, with the 67th Annual Tony Awards (which he hosted and produced) taking home Outstanding Special Class Program. He shares the honor with producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss.
The remaining Emmy Awards will be presented on August 25.
