Adapted from William March’s novel, this Maxwell Anderson play was one of Broadway’s outstanding hits. The scene is a small town where Colonel and Christine Penmark live with their seemingly sweet and charming daughter, Rhoda. But Christine has an uneasy feeling about her. When one of Rhoda’s classmates mysteriously drowns, Mrs. Penmark is alarmed. For the drowned boy was the one who won thepenmanship medal Rhoda felt she deserved.
