The Circus of Vices and Virtues

About the Show

The Circus of Vices and Virtues is a seven-act, semi-narrative circus based on the medieval vices and virtues. Using acrobats, aerialists, stilt walkers, clowns, DJ beats and more, it brings to life the surreal imagery of the series of prints on this theme created by painter and draftsman Pieter Bruegel in 16th century Flanders providing Bruegel’s mordant commentary on public moralism, transplanting it into contemporary American society. The
work is created in conversation with European new circus aesthetics, but does so in a New York environment, contributing an American perspective to a cutting-edge global genre and offering U.S. presenters and their audiences a
viable, relevant way to tap into the vast possibilities of contemporary circus.
