About This Show

Heresy tells the story of the Inquisition in 16th Century Mexico and its influence on a wealthy “converso” Jewish family (they lived as Christians), who came to Mexico after the first Conquistadors. In a modern updating of the style of Spanish classical tragedy, based on period accounts, playwright Sabina Berman explores what happened when “hidden Jews” had the opportunity in the New World to try on their true identities. Heresy is directed by Marcy Arlin.

Heresy performs in repertory with Progress. Presented through HERE’s Supported Artist Program, the production involves two new plays by internationally known writers, both about societies at different stages of implosion and renewal. Excerpts were first presented as part of the Culture Project’s Impact Festival.
