About This Show

Ensemble Studio Theatre presents the fourth annual Going to the River festival, staged readings of new plays by African-American women. Going to the River was initiated in 1999 to develop and celebrate the work of African-American women playwrights. The project came out of a growing awareness of the number of talented African-American women playwrights who have been under-produced in New York venues. With the collaboration of AUDELCO Award-winning actress and director Elizabeth Van Dyke, E.S.T. developed a forum that would bring industry exposure and greater opportunities for established and emerging African-American women playwrights from across the nation. The format includes a two-week festival of staged readings, as well as roundtable discussions focusing on issues facing Black theatre and bringing together playwrights, producers, agents and other industry professionals.
