About This Show
Borough Tales: Brooklyn was conceived by White Bird Productions as a way to explore contemporary issues in relation to the urban physical environment. It is the first in a series of five theatre projects featuring works of prominent and culturally diverse writers from each borough of New York, chosen because of their gender, ethnicity, style, and experience. These artists were commissioned to respond to the challenges of the dynamics of culture, with its endless variations on ethical and moral traditions, by reinventing a fairy tale and setting it in their own borough – Brooklyn!
The Brooklyn-based fairytales include:
TWELVE BROTHERS by Jeffrey M. Jones (Dirty Little Secrets, JP Morgan Saves the Nation w Jonathan Larson) and Camila Jones (11, Interpassions), directed by Page Burkholder (Dirty Little Secrets)
RAPUNZEL by Melissa James Gibson ([sic]/ Soho Rep, meFausto, New Dramatists), directed by David Levine (Hellhound On My Trail/Atlantic, Richard III/Expanded Arts)
THE LITTLE MATCHGIRL by Lynn Nottage (Yale professor, AT&T Award for new play Las Meninas, Poof!, Mud, River, Stone; film Side Streets); directed by Daniela Varon (Collected Stories, 14 yrs at Shakespeare & Co.)
SNOW WHITE by Onome Ekeh (Departure Lounge, Third Girl, SuperPsychaesthenia), directed by Dave Simonds (founder of Cucaracha Theater; Storm Patterns, ArtLife)
LUCKY HANS by Margie Duffield (In A Lake of Fire, Ice Island, Fever, Twister), directed by Jean Wagner (Art. Dir. Voice & Vision Theater), composer Danny Ashkenasi (Witches)
HANNAH AND GRETEL by Creative Theatrics’ Performance Team and John Istel, directed by Welker White (an actress that has worked extensively in theatre, television & film).
