Benjamin Bagby’s Beowulf is a mesmerizing one-man version of the story in which Bagby sings the original 11th-century text while accompanying himself on a medieval harp. He performs a newly expanded version of Beowulf that comprises the Complete Part 1 of the epic poem with 25 minutes of additional material drawn from the original text. The performance is accompanied by supertitles in modern English.
“Mr. Bagby comes as close to holding hundreds of people in a spell as ever a man has…When he has finished, you leave with the overwhelming impression that you know the anonymous poet who created Beowulf more than a dozen centuries ago, that you have felt the man’s personality touch you. That is much too rare an experience in theater.” — The New York Times
