Set on a remote Norwegian island, Enigma Variations focuses on a reclusive author who grants a rare interview to a journalist. The interview triggers a cascade of twisting revelations linking both men to a mysterious woman, the subject of the author’s last book. The play takes its name from Edward Elgar’s 1899 orchestral piece, 14 variations on an unspecified original theme. For over a century music historians have tried – and failed- to identify the original score.
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s play (translated by Jeremy Sams) is directed by Beverly Olevin.
