A Lie of the Mind is the last of Sam Shepard’s cycle of so-called ‘family plays’ that include Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child, and True West. It tells the story of two families dealing with the aftermath of a savage beating dealt by the son of one family on the daughter of the other. While the characters, relationships, themes and motifs from earlier plays are revisited and developed in new ways, the play moves from the ‘dangerous-yet-somehow-funny’ nightmare we expect from Sam Shepard to a new serenity. Directed by Flora Plumb.
