Casting has been announced for Intiman Theatre’s production of The Scarlet Letter, adapted by Naomi Iizuka from the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name. Lear deBessonet will direct the production, which will perform at Seattle Center, October 22-December 5, with an opening on October 29.

The play takes place against the backdrop of religious and sexual hypocrisy, as Hester Prynne, a strong-willed, passionate woman, engages in a forbidden love affair with the town’s fiery minister, resulting in an illegitimate child. Tried for adultery, Hester refuses to admit any sin or expose her lover and is sentenced to wear a scarlet “A” and forever endure the town’s hostility.

The cast will include Mark Anders (Governor Bellingham, Mistress Hibbins), Frank Boyd (Dimmesdale), Renata Friedman (Adult Pearl), Jose J. Gonzales (Reverend John Wilson), Zabryna Guevara (Hester), Izabel Mar (Pearl) and R. Hamilton Wright (Chillingworth). The cast will be accompanied on stage by violinist Emily Holden, who will perform original music composed by Todd Reynolds.

The creative team will include scenic designer Peter Ksander, costume designer Frances Kenny, lighting designer Justin Townsend, composer/sound designer/music director Todd Reynolds and choreographer Tracy Bersley.
