The Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California, has announced selections for its 2009-2010 season, built around the theme, “Family and Fortune.”

The season will begin with Clifford Odets’ Depression-era drama, Awake and Sing (August 21-September 27), to be directed by Joy Carlin. Next up will be Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig (October 30-December 6), about a man with a plus-sized girlfriend who must come to terms with his own preconceived notions of love and attraction. Barbara Damashek will direct.

For the holidays, Aurora will present its original production, The Coverlettes Cover Christmas (December 9-27), featuring Bay Area trio Darby Gould, Katie Guthorn, and Carol Bozzio Littleton. The new year will begin with the world premiere of Joel Drake Johnson’s The First Grade (January 22-February 28), to be directed by Tom Ross. The play follows a woman whose attempts to save her physical therapist from harm leads her into chaos.

Barbara Oliver will direct David Eldridge’s new version of Henrik Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman (April 2-May 9), a pointed indictment of capitalism, selfish ambition, and greed. The season will conclude with the Bay Area premiere of Stephen Karam’s Speech & Debate (June 11-July 18), about three teenage misfits in Salem, Oregon who discover they are curiously connected by a sex scandal that’s rocked their hometown.
