Taylor Iman Jones, Betsy Morgan, and More Join The Tale of Despereaux

The new musical from PigPen Theatre Co. will have its world premiere at the Old Globe Theatre.

San Diego's Old Globe has announced the cast and creative team for the world-premiere musical The Tale of Despereaux, running July 6-August 11.

Based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo and the Universal Pictures animated film, The Tale of Despereaux features a book, music, and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. and will be co-directed by Marc Bruni and PigPen Theatre Co. The story is described as follows: "Despereaux is a courageous mouse who dreams of becoming a knight. He sets off on a noble quest that will take him down into dungeons and up to the heights of a castle tower to rescue a beautiful human princess — but the dark-hearted rat Roscuro has other ideas."

Joining the cast are Alex Falberg as Lester, Ben Ferguson as Furlough, Curtis Gillen as Louise and Most High Head Mouse, Taylor Iman Jones as Princess Pea and Merlot, Ryan Melia as Librarian and Prisoner, Betsy Morgan as Miggery Sow and Antoinette, Bianca Norwood as Despereaux, Matt Nuernberger as Botticelli, Eric Petersen as Roscuro, Arya Shahi as King Philip, and Dan Weschler as Stained-Glass Knight, with swings Michael Cusimano, Natasha Harris, and Devon Hunt.

The creative team includes Jason Sherwood (scenic design), Anita Yavich (costume design), Isabella Byrd (lighting design), Nevin Steinberg (sound design), Lydia Fine and Nick Lehane (puppetry design), Jennifer Jancuska (choreography), and Christopher Jahnke (music director).

Performances will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, opening on Saturday, July 13.
