Woodie King, Jr.’s New Federal Theatre has announced the lineup of pieces that will be presented in its The Great Black Plays & Playwrights reading series, to run June 4-27 at both Castillo Theatre in midtown and National Black Theatre in Harlem.
Performances at the Castillo will be held on Fridays and Saturdays. Among the works that will be presented are Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf (June 5, 2pm), directed by Trezana Beverly; Amiri Baraka’s A Recent Killing (June 12, 7pm), directed by Hampton V. Clanton; Pearl Cleage’s Flying West (June 19, 7pm), directed by Lydia Fort; Alice Childress’ Wedding Band (June 25), directed by Chuck Smith; Lynn Nottage’s Crumbs from the Table of Joy (June 26, 2pm), directed by Marjorie Moon; and Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog(June 26, 7pm), directed by Jamie Richards.
At the National Black Theatre, readings will be held on Sundays and Mondays and will include Adam P. Kennedy and Adrienne Kennedy’s Mom, How Did You Meet the Beatles? (June 6, 7pm), directed by Imani; Ronnie Elder’s Ceremonies of Dark Old Men (June 13, 2pm), directed by Clinton Turner Davis; James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner (June 20, 2pm), directed by Chuck Patterson; Charles Gordone’s No Place to Be Somebody (June 21), Ajene D. Washington; and Ed Bullins’ In the Wine Time (June 27, 7pm), directed by Mansoor Najee-Ullah.
Other writers whose work will be included in the series are Wesley Brown, Phillip Hayes Dean, James deJongh, J.e. Franklin, P. J. Gibson, Bill Harris, Laurence Holder, Philip Hayes Dean, Mustapha Matura, Ron Milner, Alexander Simmons, Richard Wesley, and Talvin Wilks.
Other directors for the project include Eric Coleman, Nathan George, Bette Howard, A. Dean Irby, Regge Life, Justin Lord, Passion, Seret Scott, Ed Smith, Patricia White and Allie Woods & Elizabeth Van Dyke.
