Waterfall begins its run tonight at the Pasadena Playhouse. Based on a contemporary classic Thai novel, Behind the Painting by Sriburapha, the show follows an epic love story that spans the turbulent years between 1933 and 1939 in Bangkok and Tokyo. The monarchy in Thailand is collapsing, Japan is on the precipice of war, and a young Thai student falls in love. Unfortunately, he falls in love with the American wife of a Thai diplomat. Their story unfolds as the two countries experience rapid change, including a new democracy in Siam and increasingly anti-American sentiments in Japan.

The musical is directed by Tak Viravan, with a book and lyrics by Tony Award winner Richard Maltby Jr., music by Academy Award winner David Shire, and choreography by Tony Award nominee Dan Knechtges. The cast features Emily Padgett as Katherine, Bie Sukrit as Noppon, Thom Sesma as Chao-Khun, and J. Elaine Marcos as Nuan.

The creative team includes John McDaniel (music supervisor and conductor), Sasavat Busayabandh (set design), Ken Billington (lighting design), Dan Moses Schreier (sound design), and Wade Laboissonniere (costume design).

Performances will run through June 28.
