The new David Bryan-Joe DiPietro musical will receive its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse.

Next year, La Jolla Playhouse will present the world premiere of a new musical by Memphis creators Joe DiPietro and David Bryan called Diana. The Diana in question: Princess Diana, who will be played by Jeanna de Waal (American Idiot, Kinky Boots). In the video below, de Waal discusses her feelings about bringing the legendary Princess of Wales to life onstage in the new musical, which will run at the Mandell Weiss Theatre February 19-March 31.

Diana is described as follows: "In 1981, an assistant kindergarten teacher married the Prince of Wales and, overnight, became the most famous woman in the world. But behind the fairy tale, there was a troubled marriage and a young woman struggling to find her voice. Facing an entrenched monarchy and unprecedented media scrutiny, Princess Diana surprises everyone — including herself — as she grows into a global phenomenon and manages to change the world."

Christopher Ashley (Come From Away) will direct the world-premiere production, with choreography by Kelly Devine.
