Barrington Stage Company presents the regional premiere of Veils beginning this evening.

Set in 2010, the play follows Intisar, an African-American Muslim student who is hopeful that she will finally be understood as she embarks on her year abroad in Cairo. Samar, her exuberant Egyptian roommate, immediately recruits her to help work on a blog debating the controversial practice of wearing veils. Little do either of them know that the Arab Spring is fast approaching and the revolution will change everything, including their friendship.

Tom Coash’s award-winning play is directed by Julianne Boyd and features Hend Ayoub as Samar and Donnetta Lavinia Grays as Intisar.

"Veils is an important play for our audiences to see. It deals with acceptance and discrimination — two subjects that are consistently on the front page nowadays. The fact that the subjects of this play are two young Muslim women will hopefully expand our understanding of these issues to an even greater degree," said artistic director Julianne Boyd.

The creative team includes Arnulfo Maldonado (scenic design and costume design), Michael Chybowski (lighting design), Matt Sherwin (sound designer and original music), C. Andrew Bauer (projections), and Renee Lutz (stage manager).

Performances will run through October 18.
