David Adkins plays the renowned transcendentalist in the new play, which begins performances tonight.
Thoreau or, Return to Walden begins its run tonight at Berkshire Theatre Group’s Unicorn Theatre. Based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau, the play takes place in 1859, as the Union balances on the precipice of civil war. The issue of slavery threatens to tear the country apart. Events come to a head when freedom fighter and abolitionist John Brown is captured and sentenced to hang. At Walden Pond, Thoreau finds himself in the center of passion, politics, and prose in the struggle for not only his own soul but that of the American conscience.
Written by David Adkins and directed by Eric Hill, the show features David Adkins as the eponymous character.
Performances will run through July 11.
