Twyla Tharp’s new musical The Times They Are A-Changin’, set to the music of Bob Dylan, will begin previews on September 25 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and will open officially on October 26.
The show, which is set at a low-rent traveling circus, had a successful run earlier this spring at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre.
As at the Old Globe, the roles of Coyote and his father, Captain Arab, will be played in the Broadway production by Michael Arden and Thom Sesma. However, Caryn Lyn Manuel, who starred in Once Around the Sun, will replace Jenn Colella in the role of Cleo, who is now a performer (and love interest for Coyote).
Also new to the cast as part of the ensemble is Tony Award nominee John Selya (Movin’ Out). The company also includes Lisa Gadja, Luke Longacre, Ron Todorowski, Alex Brady, Marcus Choi, John Herrera, Charlie Neshyba-Hodges, Alaine Kashian, Keith Kuhl, Marty Lawson, Jason McDole, Jonathan Nosan, Joseph Putignano, and Jason Wooten. The production features scenic and costume design by Santo Loquasto, lighting design by Donald Holder, and sound design by Peter Hylsenki.
In his TheaterMania review of the show at the Old Globe, Rob Stevens wrote: “Dylan is indeed the poet of his generation, and Tharp has taken songs from his 40-plus year career and breathed new life and vision into them.”
