The Golden Bride has returned to the stage, being presented by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene through August 28 at The Museum of Jewish Heritage‘s Edmond J. Safra Hall. Bryna Wasserman and Motl Didner direct, with music direction by Zalmen Mlotek.
Featuring music by Yiddish composer Joseph Rumshinsky, libretto by Frieda Freiman, and lyrics by Louis Gilrod, this romantic comedy premiered in 1923 and was revived consistently and presented internationally through the 1940's. In The Golden Bride, a beautiful young woman named Goldele, abandoned as a child, receives an unexpected inheritance and sets off on a journey across the seas to claim her estate, find her mother, and offer her hand to the man who can help.
The cast includes Bob Ader, Glenn Seven Allen, Lisa Fishman, Regina Gibson, Cameron Johnson, Rachel Policar, Bruce Rebold, Adam B. Shapiro, and Rachel Zatcoff. The ensemble includes Jordan Becke, Alex Bird, Samantha Britt, Michael Einav, Samantha Funk, Jessica Rose Futran, Lianne Gennaco, Cody A. Hernandez, Joseph Mace, Emma Ritchie, and Tatiana Wechsler.
The show, which boasts a fourteen-person orchestra, is presented in Yiddish with English and Russian supertitles. The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene's original production of The Golden Bride was nominated for two 2015 Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical for its initial run in 2015.
