A one-night-only concert of Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley’s 1997 musical Violet was performed as part of New York City Center‘s new Encores! Off-Center series on Wednesday, July 17. Directed by Leigh Silverman, the concert starred two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster in the title role, a badly scarred young woman who embarks on a cross-country trip to visit a televangelist faith healer in order to be healed. Based on Doris Bettis’ short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” the production also featured Joshua Henry, Van Hughes, Christopher Sieber, Keala Settle, Anastacia McCleskey, Rema Webb, Paul Whitty, Austin Lesch, Emerson Steele, and the Songs of Solomon gospel choir.
