David Soul, one of the two stars of the cult TV series Starsky & Hutch, will take over the title role in the London production of Jerry Springer: The Opera on July 12. Michael Brandon, who is currently playing Springer, will give his final performance on Saturday, July 10.
Richard Thomas, who wrote the music, book and lyrics for Jerry Springer: The Opera , said of the television show on which the show is based: “It’s got tragedy. It’s got violence. There are people screaming at each other and you can’t understand what they’re saying. It’s perfect for opera.” The TV series inspired such arias as “Chick With a Dick,” “Diaper Man,” and “Montel Cums Dirty.”
The “opera” received all four honors for Best Musical at the Olivier Awards, The Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, The Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2003, and The What’s on Stage Awards.
