Stage and Screen Star Jonathan Frid Has Died

Actor Jonathan Frid, who gained fame as Barnabas Collins on the television serial Dark Shadows, has died of natural causes, according to published reports. He was 87.

Frid’s Broadway credits include Arsenic and Old Lace and Roar Like a Dove. His early career onstage included a summer appearing in such plays as The Rainmaker, The Crucible, and Time of the Cuckoo at Williamstown Theatre Festival, and two seasons with the American Shakespeare Festival in Connecticut.

Among his other stage credits are regional productions of Mass Appeal, Wait Until Dark, Murder in the Cathedral, Dial ‘M’ for Murder, Romeo and Juliet, and Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2. His last New York stage appearance was Alpha and the Omega in 1986.

Frid’s many othe television and film credits are As The World Turns, Picture of Dorian Gray, The Devil’s Daughter, and Seizure.


In addition, the actor filmed a cameo Tim Burton’s forthcoming film version of Dark Shadows, opening on May 11, starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas.
