Square One, the oft-discussed final musical from Stephen Sondheim, will have its Broadway premiere in 2023, producers have announced. Nathan Lane and Bernadette Peters are set to star.

Inspired by the Luis Buñuel films The Exterminating Angel and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, the musical features Sondheim's final score, a book by David Ives. It tells the story of a group of friends trying to dine together at the end of the world.

Story developing

News of the musical first broke in 2014, with various readings and workshops held through the years at the Public Theater. Work had reportedly stopped on the show prior to or during the pandemic, though it was picked back up towards the end of Sondheim's life. Just before his passing in November 2021, he had revealed the title, Square One, on Stephen Colbert's Late Show.
