Commissioned new works by Dael Orlandersmith and Arthur Kopit are among the selections for the seventh annual event.
Red Bull Theater announced its selections for the seventh annual Short New Play Festival, which will be presented on Monday, July 24, at 7:30pm at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
The event will feature eight world premieres by Dael Orlandersmith, Arthur Kopit, Charlotte Ahlin, Uriah Celaya, Justin Halle, Rachel Leopold, Jason Gray Platt, and Christian Simonsen. Craig Baldwin and Evan Yionoulis will direct these staged readings, and casts will include Tina Benko, Michael Braun, Bill Buell, Robert Clohessy, Sheria Irving, Joan Macintosh, Kathryn Meisle, Howard W. Overshown, Linda Powell, and more to be announced later.
Each year, Red Bull Theater selects "new works of heightened language and classical themes" from over 300 submissions and commission two for the Short New Play Festival. This year, inspired by the chosen theme "Delusions of Grandeur," playwrights delivered work "that makes use of any, or all, of the following: heightened language or verse; a classical theme or style; a classical story."
Red Bull Theater aims to embrace "the imagination of theatergoers through intimate, imaginative productions of great classic stories from all eras and cultures."
