Danai Gurira’s The Convert opened at Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre, on April 19. Emily Mann has directed the production, which runs through May 19.
The play is set in 1895 Zimbabwe, and centers on a young woman who is forced to choose between her family’s traditions and the Christian faith and Western values she has embraced. The company features Pascale Armand in the title role of Jekesai/Ester, along with Cheryl Lynn Bruce (Mai Tamba), Zainab Jah (Prudence), Kevin Mambo (Chancellor), LeRoy McClain (Chilford), Warner Joseph Miller (Tamba), and Harold Surratt (Uncle).
Opening night guests included Mia Barron, L. Scott Caldwell, Lauren Cohan, Wes Craven, Edwina Findley, Kristolyn Lloyd, Glen Mazzara, Ntare Mwine, Nyambi Nyambi, and Rutina Wesley.
