The New Group’s world premiere of David Rabe’s An Early History of Fire opened on Monday, April 30 at the Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row. Jo Bonney has directed the Off-Broadway production.
The play is set in a small Midwestern town at the tipping point of the early 1960s. A few years out of high school, Danny finds his days defined by friendship and loyalty — but a confusing new world encroaches in the form of Karen, back from college in the East, alluring and unsettling because of all she has learned.
Theo Stockman and Claire van der Boom star as Danny and Karen, with the cast also featuring Deema Aitken, Gordon Clapp, Erin Darke, Jonny Orsini, Devin Ratray, and Dennis Staroselsky.
Opening night guests included Noah Bean, Jeff Biehl, Thomas Bradshaw, Drew Hildebrand, Evan Johnson, Larissa Polonsky, Lily Rabe, Wallace Shawn, Mogan Spector, Sarah Steele, Meryl Streep, Raviv Ullman, and Vladimir Versailles, as well as the New Group’s artistic director, Scott Elliott.
