Drury Lane Theatre celebrated the opening of the musical Hairspray on April 19. Tammy Mader has directed and choreographed the production, which runs through June 17.
Based on the 1988 John Waters cult classic film, Hairspray features music by five-time Oscar nominee Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman, and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Set in 1960’s Baltimore, it is the exuberant story of big-hearted, pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad and is a glorious celebration of following dreams and standing up for what’s right.
The cast is led by Lillian Castillo as Tracy Turnblad, Michael Lindner as Edna Turnblad, Felicia Fields as Motormouth Maybelle, Tim Kazurinsky as Wilbur Turnblad, Erik Altemus as Link Larkin, Holly Lyn Laurent as Amber, and Jon Michael Reese as Seaweed J. Stubbs.
The production also features Joshlyn Lomax as Little Inez, Rebecca Pink as Penny, Holly Stauder as Prudy Pingleton, Rod Thomas as Corny Collins, Keely Vasquez as Velma Von Tussle, and George Andrew Wolff as Harriman F. Spitzer. The ensemble features Christopher Carter, Andrea Collier, Dina DiCostanzo, Jackson Evans, Reneisha Jone’ne Jenkins, Tiffany Johnson, Alex McCrary, Amy Orman, Nelson Green, Thomas Ortiz, Travis Porchia, Carly Robinson, Sawyer Smith, Drew Leigh Williams, and Sean Walton as well as Alexis J. Rodgers, Lisa Estridge, and Donica Lynn as the “Dynamites.”
