On Monday, November 5, the Playwrights Horizons production of Samuel D. Hunter’s The Whale opened at the company’s Peter J Sharp Theater.

The play, which is directed by Davis McCallum, centers on Charlie (Tony Award winner Shuler Hensley), a 600-pound, middle-aged man who has spent the past decade-and-a-half gorging himself on food. The cast also features Theatre World Award winner Cassie Beck (Liz), Reyna de Courcy (Ellie), Tasha Lawrence (Mary), and Cory Michael Smith (Elder Thomas).

Opening night guests included Dylan Baker, Becky Ann Baker, Adam Bock, Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson,Chris Henry Coffey, Tony Award winner John Cullum, Drama Desk Award winner Peter Friedman, Gideon Glick, Sam Gold, Sarah Goldberg, Obie Award winner Amy Herzog, Jennifer Mudge, Pulitzer Prize winner Bruce Norris, Maulik Pancholy, Sarah Sokolovic, and Jeremy Strong.
