Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis will take on the demanding title role of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children for Shakespeare & Company. Tony Simotes will be directing the production, opening in the summer of 2013 in the Tina Packer Playhouse, with specific dates to be announced.

Set against the backdrop of the Thirty Years War, the play follows an artful canteen woman intent on keeping her business and family alive amid the destruction of war – and not necessarily succeeding.

The family ties extend beyond the play itself, as Dukakis’ brother, Apollo Dukakis, will be a featured player in the production.

Olympia Dukakis won her Oscar for her supporting performance in Moonstruck. She was Drama Desk-nominated for her solo turn in Broadway’s Rose, and has appeared Off-Broadway and regionally in numerous stage works.
