Olney Theatre Center Artistic Director Martin Platt has announced the theatre’s 75th anniversary season, which will emphasize 20th-century American classics, new works, reinterpretations of classics and musical theater.
The season will open with the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, featuring music by Duncan Sheik with book and lyrics Steven Sater (February 7-March 3, 2013), to be followed by Tim Firth’s Neville’s Island, A Comedy in Thick Fog, directed by Platt (April 4 – 28); Jeff Talbott’s The Submission, directed by David Elliott (May 9 – June 2); Patrick Hamilton’s Angel Street (also known as Gaslight), directed By John Going (June 20 – July 14); and the musical Carnival!, featuring book by Michael Stewart with music & lyrics by Bob Merrill, and to be directed by Platt (August 1 – 26).
Olney will present BEDLAM (Theatre Company) in rotating repertory productions of Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw and Hamlet by William Shakespeare, both directed by Eric Tucker in the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab, September 4 – October 13.
The season will continue with Molière’s Tartuffe, or The Hypocrite, translated by Richard Wilbur and directed by Platt (September 26 – October 20) and the musical Once Upon a Mattress with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Barer (November 14 – December 29).
