Les Miserables claimed that no suitable Broadway theatre was available for the show.
The production originally opened in 1996 in London’s West End to generally poor reviews. After several rewrites and a successfully-reviewed reappearance in Leeds, England, the show finally made its long-awaited American debut last September at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. The show then moved to Detroit, receiving its most critical praise yet on its then-expected journey to Broadway. With New York now out of the picture, however, the show will continue its tour with a stop in Seattle, and then will finish up, at least for now, with eight weeks in Los Angeles.
