Joshua Park, an actor who appeared on Broadway as Tom Sawyer in 2001's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, has died after a short illness. He was 38.
Born in 1976 in Union County, North Carolina, Park attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He moved to New York by the early 2000s and kick-started his career by starring opposite Kristen Bell in the short Broadway run of Ken Ludwig and Don Schlitz's Tom Sawyer, directed by Scott Ellis. The performance earned him a Theatre World Award. Park's other New York theater credits included York Theatre at St. Peter's Prodigal and Irish Repertory Theatre's The Streets of New York in addition to that company's concert productions A Celtic Christmas and Finian's Rainbow.
At Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse, Park starred in a Walter Dallas-directed 2002 production of Athol Fugard's Master Harold… and the Boys. In 2006, Park took on the title role in Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson's classic coming-of-age musical Pippin at Connecticut's Goodspeed Opera House, helmed by Gabriel Barre.
On film, Park appeared in the horror movie The Bog Creatures as well as Fort Doom and Blood Relic.
In 2010, Park appeared in A Christmas Memory at Palo Alto, California's TheaterWorks. The musical, which featured a book by Duane Poole, music by Larry Grossman, and lyrics by Carol Hall, was based on the story by Truman Capote and directed by Robert Kelley.
