Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone will continue to star in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd until Saturday, November 25. The show, which originally opened on November 3, 2005, was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and picked up trophies for Best Director (John Doyle) and Best Orchestrations (Sarah Travis).
Cerveris, who plays the title role, and LuPone, who plays his partner-in-crime Mrs. Lovett, were each nominated for the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for their performances. Cerveris is a previous Tony winner for Assassins and LuPone won her Tony for Evita.
LuPone is scheduled to take off the first two weeks of August to perform the role of Mama Rose in Gypsy at the Ravinia Festival. Judy Kaye, who stepped into the role of Mrs. Lovett last week while LuPone was on vacation, is expected to return during that period.
Sweeney Todd also stars Mark Jacoby, Donna Lynne Champlin, Manoel Felciano, Alexander Gemignani, John Arbo, Diana DiMarzio, Benjamin Magnuson, and Lauren Molina. No announcement has made made about their contracts; however, Gemignani will star as Jean Valjean in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables, which begins previews on October 22.
