The Tony Award-winning musical comes to Philadelphia tonight.
Memphis begins its run this evening at the Walnut Street Theatre. Based on actual events, the show takes audiences to the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis Tennessee where Disc Jockey Dewey Phillips is trying to change the world. One of the first white DJs to play black music, his life is changed when he meets a club singer who is ready for her big break. The musical spins a tale of fame and forbidden love full of irresistible songs.
Directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan, the musical features Philip Michael Baskerville as Delray Jones, Travis Keith Battle as Gator, Nichalas Parker as Bobby, Kimber Sprawl as Felicia Farrell, Christopher Sutton as Huey Calhoun, Ron Winiski as Mr. Simmons, and Mary Martello as Mama.
The creative team includes Jack Mehler (light design), Peter Barbieri (set design), Gail Baldoni (costume design), David Temby (sound design), and Douglass G. Lutz (music and vocal director).
Performances will run through July 12.
