Richard Masur, Marin Ireland, and Jason Butler Harner will head the cast of the Public Theater’s production of Rinne Groff’s The Ruby Sunrise. The play, which will also star Audra Blaser, Patch Darragh, Maggie Siff, and Anne Scurria, will be directed by the Public’s artistic director, Oskar Eustis. Performances are set to run November 1-December 4.
The Ruby Sunrise takes place in two different time periods. In 1927, in a barn on the outskirts of Indianapolis, a young woman named Ruby (Ireland) struggles to realize her dream of inventing and perfecting the first all-electrical television system. Twenty-five years later, in a television studio in Manhattan, her daughter faces similar battles of will and crises of faith as she works to get Ruby’s story told as she feels it must be told. Eustis directed a production of the play at his former artistic home, Trinity Rep, in 2004.
Masur, a longtime film and television star, was recently seen on Broadway in Democracy and Off-Broadway in Sarah, Sarah. Ireland’s many Off-Broadway credits include Manuscript, Sabina, Far Away, and Savvanah Bay. Harner was most recently seen Off-Broadway in The Paris Letter; his other credits include Orange Flower Water and Hedda Gabler (for which he won an Obie Award).
