Performances of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical, starring original cast member Robin De Jesús, begin tonight.
In the Heights begins performances tonight at Olney Theatre Center.
The winner of four Tony Awards, In the Heights features music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. With a hip-hop, salsa, and Latin soul score, the musical tells the story of Usnavi, the local proprietor of the corner bodega in Washington Heights, a vibrant New York neighborhood full of striving immigrants and young lovers. When a winning lottery ticket is sold, fortunes shift, romance blooms, and hope springs eternal. Marcos Santana directs and choreographs the production.
Robin De Jesús (Sonny in the original Broadway production) stars as Usnavi. Joining him in the cast are Linedy Genao (Vanessa), Mili Diaz (Nina), Marquise White (Benny), Rayanne Gonzales (Abuela Claudia), Natascia Diaz (Daniela), Michael J. Mainwaring (Sonny), Danny Bolero (Kevin), Vilma Gil (Camila), Juan Drigo Ricafort (Graffiti Pete), and Tobias A. Young (Piragua Guy). Rounding out the ensemble are Scean Aaron, Eunice Bae, Sharlane Conner, Andre Hinds, Jesse Jones, Ashleigh King, Rebecca Kritzer, and Melissa Victor.
The creative team includes Milagros Ponce de León (scenic design), Cory Pattak (lighting design), Frank Labovitz (costume design), and Matt Rowe (sound design). Music direction is by Christopher Youstra, and the production stage manager is Karen Currie.
In the Heights is a coproduction with Round House Theatre.
Performances continue through October 8.
