New York City
Performances of the classic musical begin tonight.
Mary Poppins starts its run tonight at La Mirada Theatre. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, which stars the eponymous nanny, the musical is set in England in 1910. Jack-of-all-trades Bert presents the audiences with the Banks family. With a relentless patriarch for a father and an often absent mother, Jane and Michael have effectively chased away all of their nannies. That is until Mary Poppins shows up unannounced. With magic and a healthy dose of common sense, she straightens out Jane and Michael, and ultimately, teaches the whole family how to value each other again. The score includes classics such as "Feed the Birds," "Jolly Holiday," "Step in Time," and "Chim-Chim-Cher-ee."
The musical is directed by Glenn Casale, choreographed by Dan Mojica with a book by Julian Fellows and original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Richard B. Sherman. The cast features Brandi Burkhardt as Mary Poppins, Leigh Brian Wakeford as Bert, Martin Kildare as Mr. Banks, Shannon Warne as Mrs. Banks, Time Winters as Admiral Boom and Bank Chairman, Mary Gutzi as Miss Andrews, Mrs. Smythe, and Queen Victoria, and Helen Geller as the bird woman.
The creative team includes George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (new songs and additional music), Dennis Castellano (music direction), J. Branson (set design), Janet Swenson (costume design), Jared Sayeg (lighting design), Josh Bessom (sound design), Katie McCoy (hair, make-up, and wig design), Terry Hanrahan (props), and Jill Gold (stage manager).
Performances will run through June 21.
