Kenneth Branagh will return to the New York stage in the autumn of 2024 in a new production of Shakespeare’s King Lear.

Branagh will take on the title role in the production, which he will direct himself in the Griffin Theatre at the Shed. Prior to this off-Broadway run, Branagh will debut the show at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End for 50 performances, beginning October 21, 2023.

King Lear is the latest addition to Branagh’s impressive Shakespearean repertoire, which includes his film adaptations of Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, and Love’s Labour’s Lost, and, more recently, Romeo and Juliet and The Winter’s Tale on stage. His last New York stage appearance was in a 2014 mounting of Macbeth at the Park Avenue Armory.

Further details and casting are still to be announced.
