America Ferrera will star in a Broadway production of Beth Henley’s 1984 play, The Miss Firecracker Contest, according to EW.com. Judith Ivey will direct the production, which is expected to premiere in Spring 2012.

Set in the small town of Brookhaven, Mississippi, the play centers around a young woman who enters the show’s titular beauty pageant as a way to elevate her somewhat tarnished reputation.

As recently announced, Ferrera will be starring in the London production of Chicago in November. She has previously appeared Off-Broadway in Dog Sees God, and is best known for her award-winning portrayal of Betty Suarez on ABC’s Ugly Betty.

Ivey won two Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Steaming and Hurlyburly. Her directing credits include Off-Broadway productions of Vanities: A New Musical and The Butcher of Baraboo.
