The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene will present this new production of the Jerry Bock-Sheldon Harnick-Joseph Stein musical.
National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene has announced that legendary Tony- and Oscar-winning actor Joel Grey will direct the US premiere of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, to run July 4-August 26 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage's Edmond J. Safra Theatre.
In addition, Tony winner Beowulf Boritt (Come From Away) will contribute set design, and Tony winner Ann Hould-Ward (Sunday in the Park With George) will contribute costume design.
Featuring a book by Joseph Stein and a score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof is inspired by Sholem Alecheim's stories of the milkman Tevye, who tries to hold on to "tradition" as the world around him and his family in the little village of Anatevka changes. The Yiddish translation was crafted by Israeli actor-director Shraga Friedman in 1965 and made its world premiere in Israel more than 50 years ago.
Harnick and Harold Prince, the original producer of Fiddler on the Roof, have been consulting with the NYTF on the production.
