Following a successful reading at 92Y Tribeca in May 2012, Handbook for an American Revolutionary, both written and performed by Matthew-Lee Erlbach (Happy Sunshine Kung Fu Flower), will receive its first fully staged off-Broadway production this July. Directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Tony Speciale (Unnatural Acts), the play will begin performances July 19 at The Gym at Judson with an official press opening scheduled for July 22. Form Theatricals (Anthony Francavilla and Zachary Laks) produces, in association with Judson Arts.

Handbook for an American Revolutionary is described as “an explosive and hilarious study of America’s modern-day Davids and Goliaths.” Inspired by his travels throughout the U.S., Erlbach embodies twelve different characters throughout the play, illustrating each of their uniquely American stories of hardship.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Matthew-Lee Erlbach, a young playwright whose work I’ve been following closely in recent years,” said director Speciale in a statement. “Handbook for an American Revolutionary is an inspiring, brutal and (oftentimes) humorous look at the various ways Americans live, survive, and collaborate together in the 21st century.”
