Lazar was diagnosed with the disease in 2022.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Broadway star Aaron Lazar as he continues his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Lazar, whose Broadway credits include The Light in the Piazza, Les Misérables, A Little Night Music, and The Last Ship, publicly revealed in January 2024 that he had been diagnosed with ALS approximately two years earlier. Since sharing his diagnosis, he has become a prominent advocate for ALS awareness and research while continuing to perform, speak, and raise funds for organizations dedicated to finding treatments and a cure.
The newly launched fundraiser aims to help offset the significant medical, caregiving, and accessibility expenses associated with living with the progressive neurodegenerative disease. Since being diagnosed, Lazar has “lost the use of his legs, arms, and hands. He requires a BIPAP machine to breathe and a full-time caregiver at his side to help him throughout the day and night. With his increased needs, the cost of full-time caregiving, medical equipment, and specialized therapies has grown to more than $300,000 every year. Aaron’s ability to generate income for his family is severely limited. He needs help to stay in the fight.”
In recent years, Lazar has emerged as a leading voice within the ALS community. His debut album, Impossible Dream, featured collaborations with dozens of Broadway and entertainment stars and earned a Grammy nomination. A portion of the album’s proceeds benefited ALS-related causes.
